Tiger Woods’ lawyers appeared in a Martin County circuit court on May 12 to argue whether the golfer’s prescription drug records should be handed over to the state following his recent DUI arrest.
The professional golf icon, 50, was arrested after he was involved in a rollover car crash near his home in Jupiter, Florida, on March 27. A sheriff’s office report said deputies found two pain pills in his pocket, which were identified as the opioid hydrocodone.
He was charged with a misdemeanor DUI, along with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Woods pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to NewsNation, prosecutors told the court they would issue a subpoena seeking copies of all prescription medication records for Woods on file at a Palm Beach pharmacy from the start of the year through the end of last month. However, Woods’ attorney fires back, arguing that the golfer has a constitutional right to privacy regarding his prescription medications, according to a court filing.
“The defense objects to the issuance of a subpoena and requests the court to conduct a hearing to determine if the prescription records are ‘relevant to the criminal investigation,’” said Woods’ attorney, Douglas Duncan.
Prior to the hearing, Duncan and prosecutors agreed on the use and release of the records to shield them from public view.
Judge Darren Steele granted the prosecution’s motion.
What happened during Tiger Woods crash, arrest?
Woods was allegedly traveling at high speed on a residential road when he crashed into the rear trailer of a pressure-cleaning truck, causing his Land Rover to roll over.
Woods crawled out of the passenger window. He showed signs of impairment and told police he’d taken some prescription medication, but states he had not consumed any illegal substances at the time of the accident.
He was arrested and taken to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, where he was administered an alcohol breath test, which was negative. Woods refused a urinalysis. He was charged with DUI and booked into the Martin County Jail, where he was released on bond after eight hours.
