Jon Sumrall's hot-seat rating as he kicks off debut season at Florida

First-year Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall was mentioned among the head men facing the most pressure entering the 2026 season.

CBS Sports ranked the managers based on expectations, recent performance, contract and program trajectory. Sumrall was given a rating of 0.8 — compare that to Florida State’s Mike Norvell, who received a 3.3, and Georgia’s Kirby Smart, who got a 0.1.

Norvell is on the hot seat in Tallahassee after a dismal 7-17 record over the last two seasons, a mark well below the FSU standard; his $51 million contract doesn’t help matters for the embattled coach. On the other end of the spectrum, over the last five seasons Smart has led the Bulldogs to a 65-7 overall record, back-to-back national titles, and five consecutive New Year’s Six bowl appearances.

Besides Smart, several SEC coaches appear on the list as the conference standard is among the nation’s loftiest. South Carolina’s Shane Beamer (4.0), Arkansas’ Sam Pittman (3.67), Oklahoma’s Brent Venables (3.0), Kentucky’s Mark Stoops (2.67), and Auburn’s Hugh Freeze (2.33) all have ratings north of 2.0. There is a narrow margin for error when competing for an SEC title, which coincides with national title contention in most years.

Coaches entering their first season are generally not considered hot-seat candidates, but sentiment around the college football landscape leans towards Florida producing at a high level this fall. Many experts assume the Gators will see substantial improvement at the onset of the Sumrall era, with some even viewing UF as a playoff dark horse.
