A boil water advisory has been issued for an Oakland County community after power was knocked out to a water pumping station, officials said.
Other nearby communities have also asked residents to restrict water usage until the station is back online.
City of Rochester Hills officials said Thursday they have issued a boil water advisory for residents following a failure in the regional water authority’s system. They said the failure in the Great Lakes Water Authority system happened at about 8 a.m.
“Residents in the impacted area will experience low pressure until the GLWA system is working properly, and we ask you to shut off your irrigation systems and avoid any extra water use,” the city said. “At this time, we do not have an estimated timeframe for when pressure will be restored. We will continue to share updates as they become available.”
Meanwhile, the city of Auburn Hills’ Department of Public Works issued a mandatory water restriction for the entire community.
Officials said residents may not use water for any non-necessary activity, such as lawn watering, vehicle washing, or filling outdoor pools. Failure to comply could result in fines or a water service shut-off, they said.
“The (city) is taking this precaution because of a GLWA system pump station power outage, which has caused lower pressures to the area,” they said. “The water system is in an emergency operational state at the moment, so the above actions will help keep water available for all customers in the area, and adjacent cities and townships.”
Orion Township has also placed its residents under a water restriction.
“Due to reduced water pressure from Great Lakes Water Authority, resulting from a power outage at the pump station, we ask that all water use be limited to essential needs only,” officials said. “Please also refrain from all outdoor water use until further notice. We are working with DTE and GLWA to resolve this as soon as possible and will provide updates as soon as these restrictions have been lifted.”
GLWA officials confirmed its North Service Center Pump Station experienced a disruption at about 8 a.m. They said the issue affected Rochester Hills, Orion Township, Auburn Hills, the Village of Lake Orion, a section of Oakland Township, Troy and Bloomfield Township.
The authority is investigating the cause of the problem, and its crews have begun restoring water pressure to the affected communities.
