The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed veteran cornerback Levi Wallace on the team’s reserve/injured list, the team announced Saturday, just ahead of their preseason Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wallace was signed by Jacksonville just one week ago to address the team’s depth at the cornerback position. Jaguars corner Montaric Brown, listed as a top backup on the team’s first unofficial depth chart, has not practiced much this training camp as he’s dealing with a lower-body injury. Brown will miss the rest of camp.
In a corresponding move, the Jaguars re-signed corner Aydan White, who was originally waived to make room for Wallace’s arrival.
The Jaguars have worked to address the team’s secondary this year. In free agency, the Jaguars signed corner Jourdan Lewis and safety Eric Murray. Both players are expected to be starters this year, adding a veteran presence to a young defensive backfield.
In the draft, Jacksonville traded up to select corner/receiver Travis Hunter. Hunter is working at both positions and is expected to be one of the first players in the modern era to play both sides of the ball at a high level. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen recently intimated that Hunter could play up to 80% of the team’s snaps on either side of the ball, respectively.
Jacksonville’s first look at Hunter comes Saturday evening. Hunter is expected to play on both sides of the ball. How much work he gets remains to be seen, but Coen made it clear ahead of the matchup that his players need the work to learn new systems ahead of the regular season.
