Jacksonville after-school program receives its largest grant ever

The Sanctuary on 8th Street after-school and summer camp program in Jacksonville has received a $250,000 grant, the largest in its 34-year history.

The funds came from the Warren and Augusta Hume Foundation, a Ponte Vedra Beach-based philanthropy.

“It’s a game changer,” sanctuary Executive Director Rick Cartlidge said. “It allows us to upgrade the facility and give our wonderful children the best they deserve.”

The gift “shows there are great people out there wanting to do wonderful things for nonprofits,” he said.

The grant stemmed from Cartlidge speaking at a Rotary Club meeting — seeking funding for more tables and chairs — with a foundation representative in attendance.

The project will upgrade the outdoor and front entrance areas, transform a classroom into a “sensory, development and play” space and launch a new summer nourishment meal program, according to the nonprofit.
