It’s been over a week since the government shutdown began, and so far, no end date has been mentioned.
The federal government shutdown reached Day 10 on Oct. 10 as senators have rejected multiple funding bills from both sides.
According to USA TODAY, the Senate Democrats pushed for the same health care reforms in their package, while the GOP-backed legislation would have temporarily kept government funding going until Nov. 21.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has said he would cut what he called “Democrat programs” from the government if the shutdown keeps dragging on.
“We’re going to be cutting some very popular Democrat programs that aren’t popular with Republicans, frankly, because that’s the way this works,” President Trump says. “They wanted to do this, so we’ll give them a little taste of their own medicine.”
No additional votes are expected on reopening the government until at least Oct. 14.
This comes as Trump also doubled down on threats to block some furloughed federal workers from receiving back pay once this shutdown is over, claiming some “won’t qualify.” Yet Trump insisted members of the military will not miss their next paychecks as he signaled support for stand-alone legislation to ensure they are paid during the shutdown, according to USA TODAY.

What goes into a president’s approval rating? When did they start?
According to data agency Gallup, a presidential approval rating is a “simple measure, yet a very powerful one that has played a key role in politics for over 70 years.”
A president’s approval rating reflects the percentage of Americans polled who approve of the president’s performance. Anything can impact a president’s rating, such as legislation passed, actions taken and elections held.
According to ABC News, an approval rating doesn’t just represent how well the administration is doing for the general public; it can also determine the outcome of an upcoming election for a politician or how much they accomplish during their time in office.
Presidential approval ratings were first conducted by George Gallup, the founder of the American Institute of Public Opinion, around 1935 to gauge public support for the president of the United States during their term.
While Gallup has tracked presidential approval for 70 years, other organizations also release their own polls, including Ipsos and Morning Consult.
How does Trump’s approval rating compare with his first term?
Trump ended his first term in 2021 with a final approval rating of 34%, the same as former presidents George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.
According to Gallup polling, Trump’s approval average was 41%. They noted he is the only president not to receive a job rating of 50% or higher at any point in his presidency.
