How long will 'Michael' be in theaters? When it could hit streaming

“Michael” shattered box office records during its premiere last month and is now the second-highest-grossing music biopic of all time, second only to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which grossed $910.8 million worldwide.

The controversial movie about the late “King of Pop” stars Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, portraying the icon, and has grossed $577 million worldwide since its April 24 premiere, according to Deadline.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and heavily produced by the Jackson estate, the film follows the life of the music icon, “from his extraordinary early days in the Jackson 5 to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fuels a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world.”

As of May 14, “Michael” is still showing in theaters across the country. If you would rather watch it at home, you’ll have to wait until it hits streaming services in a few months.

Here’s what we know about when “Michael” will be available to stream at home and which streaming service will likely house the film.

How long will ‘Michael’ be in theaters?

Typically, new movies stay in theaters for around a month or so, which can fluctuate depending on the movie. Given that “Michael” is a massive hit with audiences, it could see an extended stay.

“Over the last several years, the average theatrical window has landed somewhere between 30 and 45 days across all wide releases, but that number oscillates year to year and film to film,” Slash Film says.

“Despite an increasingly complex market, box office performance is still the main indicator of how long a movie will stay in cinemas. If your film is making money for theaters, they’ll want to keep showing it.”

As of May 14, “Michael” has been in theaters for 22 days.
