How Devin Lloyd, Travis Etienne could give Jaguars 2027 draft a boost

Free agents Devin Lloyd and Travis Etienne could end up giving the Jacksonville Jaguars a boost in the 2027 NFL draft.

If Lloyd or Etienne ends up signing elsewhere in free agency, in return, the Jaguars could land a compensatory draft pick for either player in the 2027 NFL draft.

So what is a compensatory draft pick?

Every draft, the NFL awards at least 32 additional (compensatory) picks for certain players who go from one team to another via the previous offseason’s free agency period. In short, if a team loses more compensatory free agents than they sign, they will get a draft pick in return for the difference.

There is a formula that takes into account the playing time of that free agent, their salary, and any postseason honors they received. Essentially, the better the player, the better the draft pick that the team receives for losing them.

And chances are, given the quality of players that Lloyd and Etienne are, the potential compensatory picks that the Jaguars could get in return could be quite good, even a mid-round selection.

Now, it’s important to note that if the Jaguars sign any outside compensatory free agents, that addition could negate the fact that Lloyd and/or Etienne signed elsewhere.

In the 2026 NFL draft, the Jaguars are not projected to receive any compensatory picks because last offseason, they signed more compensatory free agents than they lost.

Any compensatory picks received provide James Gladstone with another opportunity to boost the roster or the ability to better move around the draft board.
