Bragging rights are on the line this week in the Gainesville area for high school baseball.
Yep, that’s right. It’s district championship week.
The action has been going strong all week, and in fact, four local teams won that elusive crown on Thursday and clinched a postseason berth.
Union County defeated Lafayette 5-2 to win Rural-District 6. Palatka held on to stop a furious Santa Fe rally and win Class 3A-District 5. Columbia claimed its second consecutive district title with a 6-2 dub over Fleming Island. Finally, St. Francis Catholic won its second straight district title – over a local team once again. That squad was Oak Hall in a 16-5 win.
Four more district titles are on tap for Friday. Buchholz hosts Tocoi Creek; Trinity Catholic welcomes in Newberry; Suwannee travels to Baldwin, and Trenton and Williston meet in an all-local matchup.
