GRU to lower electric fuel adjustment charge beginning June 1

Gainesville Regional Utilities announced it will lower its electric fuel adjustment charge from 55 mills to 50 mills effective June 1.

In a May 29 press release, GRU said it would reduce the fuel adjustment by 5 mills, with residential customers using 1,000 kWh of power saving $5 on their next bill. GRU said the average bill will now be $151.60.

GRU said it has taken steps to mitigate increases by participating in long-term, pre-paid fuel arrangements and maintaining a fleet of power plants that runs on a variety of fuel sources.

GRU had increased the fuel adjustment in recent months to recover higher-than-expected fuel expenses caused by winter storms. From December 2025 to April 2026, GRU raised the rate four times from 35 to 55 mills.

“Natural gas prices have come down, so we’re able to provide some relief just in time for summer,” GRU CEO Ed Bielarski said in the press release “We will continue to monitor fuel costs and make monthly adjustments as necessary.”

With the utility consistently evaluating the charge and increasing or lowering it based on market conditions, GRU told The Sun it does not make money on the electric fuel adjustment portion of the utility bill.
