Grassroots Free School hosts open house for families

Tallahassee families interested in alternative education will get the chance to learn more about Grassroots Free School during an upcoming open house.

On June 20 at 3 p.m., an open house and orientation will take place on the school’s campus at 2458 Grassroots Way.

The event is designed give prospective students and their families a look into the school’s student-led learning model.

“This is the first time in many years that we’ve had an open house because we typically offer private tours,” said the school’s executive director, Kim Weinrich. “We have heard from some parents looking for alternatives to schooling.”

Grassroots Free School operates as a democratic, self-directed education community, where students help shape their own learning experiences – rather than following a traditional curriculum.

The school doesn’t separate students by grade, so children and teens of varying ages learn together with an emphasis on creativity, independence and community involvement.

During the open house, visitors will be able to tour the campus, meet teachers and current students, and learn about the school’s approach to education.

Unlike traditional schools, Grassroots Free School allows students to choose how they spend their time throughout the day, whether that involves academic study or creative pursuits. Weinrich said this model helps foster intrinsic motivation and a lifelong love of learning.

“We want to make sure we’re reaching any parents who are looking for something different for their kids in education,” Weinrich said. “We’re proud of what we do and hope we can reach as many families as we can to tell them about our philosophy.”

The school has become part of a broader movement of alternative education programs that prioritize flexibility and student autonomy. Supporters argue that these models better meet the needs of students who may struggle in structured settings.

Still, it’s important for parents to determine if the school is the right fit, Weinrich said.

The school is currently accepting applications for the upcoming school year and expecting an enrollment of at least 50 students next school year, including homeschooled students who enroll part time.
