FSU baseball run-rules Wake Forest to start ACC play

The No. 15 Florida State Seminoles opened ACC play with a 10-0 win over the No. 12 Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Friday at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was a run-rule victory for FSU, who improved to 14-3 overall and 1-0 in ACC play.

Wes Mendes had a sensational start for the Seminoles, pitching all 7 innings. He allowed just two hits, striking out 11 batters and walking two. He is now 5-0 on the season with a 0.63 ERA. He has allowed just five runs in 28 2/3 innings, striking out 41 batters.

FSU’s offense hit a season-high five homers in the game, with Eli Putnam hitting two. Myles Bailey started it with a two-run homer in the first, his seventh of the season. Brayden Down hit a two-run shot in the third before Putnam hit a solo homer in the fourth and again in the fifth. Nathan Cmeyla also hit a solo home run in the fifth, his first of the season.

The Semioles scored in five of the seven innings, scoring multiple runs in four of them as they kept adding to their lead. They finished with 12 hits and seven walks, striking out five times. Dowd, Cmeyla, Putnam, and Eli Fisher all had two or more hits in the bottom half of the lineup.

FSU and Wake Forest will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET in Game Two of the series, with the game set to be on ACC Network Extra. The Seminoles will start lefty Trey Beard (1-0, 2.92 ERA), and Wake Forest will counter with righty Chris Levonas (4-0, 1.83 ERA).
