The No. 9 Florida State Seminoles beat the NC State Wolfpack 15-5 on Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. They won the series with the win and improved to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in ACC games.
FSU opened the scoring in the first inning after Kelvyn Paulino Jr. hit a one-out double and NC State intentionally walked Myles Bailey, who had three homers in the series. Nathan Cmeyla singled to load the bases before Eli Putnam scored Paulino with a sacrifice fly. John Stuetzer made it a 2-0 game with a two-out single.
The Seminoles took control in the second inning as Cal Fisher and Brayden Dowd hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners for Paulino. He responded with a three-run homer to center, the first of his career. NC State then hit Bailey, who scored on a triple by Putnam, who scored on another single by Stuetzer to make it a 7-0 game.
They added another run in the third when Paulino was hit with the bases loaded, scoring Will Bavaro. NC State got on the board in the fifth inning with a two-out double off of FSU starter Bryson Moore, making it an 8-2 game. Moore allowed the two runs in five innings on five hits and three walks, striking out four batters.
FSU immediately got the runs back, and then some. Fisher was hit to start the inning and got to second on a groundout by Paulino. NC State once again intentionally walked Bailey with two outs, and Cmeyla once again made them pay, scoring Fisher with a double.
Bailey scored on a passed ball before an error allowed Cmeyla to score, putting FSU up 11-2. They added four more runs in the sixth inning when they intentionally walked Bailey to load the bases with two outs, once again putting the pressure on Cmeyla to deliver. While a balk allowed one run to score, he drove in two more with a double to put FSU up 14-2. Putnam singled him home to put them up 15-2, capping off the inning
Cmeyla’s three hits tied his career high, and all came after Bailey’s three intentional walks. FSU finished the game with 14 hits and seven walks as five different Seminoles had multiple hits, and eight of the nine starters reached multiple times.
NC State scored three runs in the seventh to try to prevent the run-rule victory, but Kevin Mebil got a double play to end the threat and the game.
FSU will return to action on Tuesday when they play the Florida Gators for the second time this season. They will meet at VyStar Ballpark in Jacksonville, Florida, with the game set to start at 6 p.m. ET and broadcast on SEC Network+.
