The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will get their first NFC South matchup of the 2026 season in Week 7 as they travel to Carolina to face the defending division champion Panthers. After navigating a brutal early-season stretch filled with playoff-caliber opponents and primetime matchups, the Buccaneers now enter what could quickly become one of the most important games on their schedule. Division games always carry extra weight, but facing the reigning NFC South champions on the road raises the stakes even further.
The Storyline
The biggest storyline entering this matchup is simple: the road back to the NFC South champion likely goes through Carolina. The Panthers surprised much of the league last season by capturing the division title and establishing themselves as one of the rising teams in the NFC. Now, Tampa Bay heads into Charlotte looking to reclaim control of a division it had largely dominated in recent years.
For the Buccaneers, it is a chance to prove they can still compete for the top spot in the division despite Carolina’s emergence. For the Panthers, it is an opportunity to defend home field and reinforce that the NFC South now runs through them. The matchup also comes at an interesting point in Tampa Bay’s schedule. After several emotionally and physically demanding games to begin the season, the Buccaneers now transition directly into divisional football, where familiarity and execution often matter more than talent alone.
Key matchups
Buccaneers defensive front vs. Panthers rushing attack
Division games are often won in the trenches, and this matchup could be no different. Carolina’s offense thrives when it can establish physicality on the ground and stay ahead of schedule offensively. Tampa Bay’s defensive front must control the line of scrimmage early and force the Panthers into more obvious passing situations. Chubba Hubbard may have played second fiddle in 2025, but make no mistake he is looking to reclaim the workhorse role in a Panthers stable that’s deep 1-4 especially when adding Jonathan Brooks who’s missed a majority of his career with injuries thus far.
Baker Mayfield vs. Panthers secondary
Carolina’s defense emerged as one of the more disciplined units in the division last season, meaning Baker Mayfield will need to remain patient and avoid forcing throws. Jaycee Horn is one of the best CBs in the league when it comes to sticky coverage, so Baker will need to be dialed in and, most of all, calm when it comes to this matchup. Division games carry tons of emotions, but Mayfield must not let them influence his decision-making.
Keys to Winning
For Tampa Bay, handling the road environment and avoiding mistakes will be critical. Division road games are rarely clean or easy, and the Buccaneers cannot afford turnovers or self-inflicted penalties against a confident Panthers team playing at home. Defensively, limiting explosive plays and winning early downs will be key. Todd Bowles’ defense thrives when opponents become predictable offensively, and forcing Carolina into longer passing situations could allow Tampa Bay’s pressure packages to take over.
