Florida still sits among nation's best recruiting classes after flip

The Florida Gators are currently ranked No. 5 in Rivals latest 2027 recruiting rankings, the program boasts multiple blue-chip commitments that have elevated Jon Sumrall’s team among national powerhouses Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Miami. The class is led by offensive line commit Maxwell Hiller, who is the lone five-star future signing for the Orange and Blue.

Florida’s class features depth of quality, with its 23 pledges commanding an average rating of 90.16 — compare that to the No. 1-ranked Aggies’ total of 91.19. Recent commitments that have fueled the Gators’ rise include 6-foot-5-inch, 266-pound, four-star defensive lineman Cahron Wheeler and 6-foot-3-inch, 195-pound, four-star linebacker Ja’Bois Smith.

The Gators staff has secured major victories on the trail against the country’s premier programs, further proving the cultural and identity shift within the organization. With several top 100 prospects still on Florida’s radar, the class has the potential to climb even higher up the recruiting ladder.

Despite never coaching a game at the Power Four level, Jon Sumrall is recruiting like an elite SEC head man — the former Tulane coach is winning head-to-head battles in rival territory, most notably in Georgia, where the Gators have secured two blue-chippers in 5-foot-10-inch, 197-pound, four-star running back Andrew Beard and Smith, who also hails from the Peach State.

The class retains its status as one of the highest-rated groups despite four-star offensive lineman Kennedee Jackson’s flip to Georgia earlier this month. The 6-foot-6-inch, 297-pound prospect originally committed to Florida on June 2 as the program’s No. 18 future signing, before reports suggested that he would attend an official visit to Athens on June 12.

He announced his decision to join the Bulldogs on June 13. Before Jackson’s flip, the Gators were ranked as high as No. 3 on ESPN’s recruiting rankings.

Florida has powered its way into the top five, but the next question becomes: Can the Gators push up into the top three? Catching Texas A&M and Miami will likely require another five-star catch for Sumrall, which is not out of the realm of possibility, as Florida continues to engage top-ranked uncommitted prospects who are flip targets.
