A Palm Beach County man accused July 27 of traveling more than 100 mph on Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County was jailed in connection with violating Florida’s “super speeder” law, according to an arrest affidavit.
A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper near the Port St. Lucie Boulevard exit about 2:45 a.m. reported measuring 20-year-old Chris Espinal-Duron’s speed at 110 mph as Espinal-Duron drove a Kia sedan north, the arrest affidavit states.
Espinal-Duron, of Riviera Beach, was jailed by FHP on a charge of operating a vehicle exceeding the speed limit 100+ mph, threatening a person or property.
In effect since July 2025, the super speeder law targets drivers who go 50 mph or more over the speed limit or drive over 100 mph in a manner that endangers others, according to Florida statutes. Penalties can include jail time, significant fines, and a mandatory court hearing.
During the stop, officials confirmed Espinal-Duron had an outstanding Palm Beach County warrant charging homicide – negligent manslaughter – killing a human other than by murder or homicide. Details about that offense were not immediately available.
Espinal-Duron told troopers he knew he was traveling too fast and was “just trying to get home,” according to an arrest affidavit.
Espinal-Duron also received citations regarding failure to carry and exhibit a driver’s license, and having an open container while operating a motor vehicle. The trooper reported finding an open bottle of Crown Royal whiskey on the rear seat.
Espinal-Duron was held July 30 in the St. Lucie County Jail and is on hold by Palm Beach County regarding the death case, a jail official said.
