Florida basketball legends Maxwell, Moten named to UF Hall of Fame

Florida basketball legends Vernon Maxwell and Andrew Moten were officially named to the 2026 University of Florida Athletics Hall of Fame class last week.

Maxwell’s mark of 2,450 points remains atop Florida’s all-time career scoring list while Moten ranks fourth with 1,930 career points. Both players were among the foundational stars who elevated the sport in Gainesville — Maxwell helped lead the Gators to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1987, which was a major turning point for the program.

Head coach Todd Golden personally informed Maxwell and Moten of their Hall of Fame selections during a video call. Golden lauded the men for “getting the program on the map.” He praised the future inductees’ leadership and on-court performance for establishing decades of basketball success in Florida. Maxwell went on to win two NBA championships with the Houston Rockets, while Moten was drafted by the New Jersey Nets.

The Gators’ rise in the 1980s made national relevance possible; the program continued to evolve until its first national championship in 2006 under legendary coach Billy Donovan.

Golden embraces the history and tradition of Florida basketball while etching his own name in the history books, becoming the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 wins. He achieved this feat in just 139 games, beating the previous record of 154 set by Donovan.
