Jon Sumrall has seen some early success on the recruiting front with Florida, so much so that The Athletic’s Antonio Morales included the Gators on his list of the top-10 most-interesting college football programs in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Coaching changes tend to thrust teams onto lists like these. Florida joins LSU, Michigan, and Penn State, among others, on Morales’ top 10. In fact, Indiana and Texas Tech are the only two teams with a returning head coach on the list. So, what makes Sumrall and Florida unique?
“Sumrall has displayed some really encouraging signs,” Morales said. “The Gators just landed a commitment from four-star receiver Elias Pearl, a top-100 prospect, on Tuesday. Pearl is one of six top-150 prospects in Florida’s class, which is now 16 members deep with an average player rating of 92.32. The Gators’ class ranks fifth nationally, so the bones are there for a really impressive group.”
The early success has fans buying into Sumrall more than they were when he was announced as the head coach of the program, but it won’t matter without wins. Napier also laid a nice foundation, landing DJ Lagway and others. None of that mattered without wins behind it.
Sumrall knows how to win. He took Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season, something Florida has failed to do in the decade since the sport changed its postseason format. The Green Wave benefited from an expansion to a 12-team playoff, and the Gators should have no problem finding their way in if the program lives up to the expectations set by the past three decades.
It’s been so far, so good for Sumrall, but holding that top-5 recruiting class ranking might rely on what the transition looks like halfway through the college football season.
