A 55-year-old bicyclist was critically injured when he veered into and was struck by a sedan on U.S. Highway 27 near Clara Kee Boulevard in north Tallahassee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 3:44 p.m. on June 24 in the southbound lanes of the highway. The area is near Lake Jackson.
Preliminary findings indicate that the bicyclist was riding close to the right shoulder, ahead of a southbound sedan driven by a 76-year-old Tallahassee woman, FHP said.
As the vehicle approached, the bicyclist, also of Tallahassee, reportedly veered into its path and was hit, according to FHP.
Both the cyclist and the vehicle came to rest in the median. The driver of the sedan was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained critical injuries, FHP said.
The Highway Patrol does not name those involved in wrecks in its news releases.
The inside southbound lane of U.S. 27 was temporarily closed as troopers conducted an on-scene investigation. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Leon County EMS assisted.
