Did Florida experience another earthquake?

A week after residents from Southwest Florida to Melbourne and cities farther north reported feeling a tremor or slight aftershocks from an earthquake in Cuba, reports flooded social media about another quake felt in the Sunshine State.

Was there an earthquake in Florida on June 15, 2026?

On the morning of Monday, June 15, an earthquake did hit off the coast of Cuba, and some Floridians reportedly felt the rumble. But the rumble was actually an aftershock from the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that occurred in the Gulf last week (see below), according to the U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS.

USGS also reported a magnitude 4.9 earthquake at 1:37 p.m. June 15 in the water that was about 10 miles deep.

In addition, a small earthquake rattled parts of Maryland on June 15, surprising residents across Harford County and the Bel Air area, according to preliminary data from the USGS.

The quake was minor in magnitude — reported around 2.4 — but was shallow enough to be felt by people in nearby communities, where residents described brief shaking and a sudden jolt.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and no emergency alerts were issued. Earthquakes of this size are typically too small to cause structural impacts, though they can still be felt, especially when centered at shallow depths.

Maryland sits well outside the country’s major fault zones, though small, infrequent quakes do occasionally occur along older, buried fault systems in the eastern U.S.

When was the earthquake in Florida?

After 2 p.m. ET Monday, June 8, 2026, chatter on social media lit up around Florida about a possible earthquake.

Was there an earthquake in Florida? What makes an earthquake ‘significant?’

News reports show tremors from the June 8, 2026, 6.1 earthquake in Cuba were felt in parts of Southwest Florida, Orlando and Tampa. WDW News Today, which covers Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the Lake Buena Vista area, reported guests at the Magic Kingdom and other Disney parks felt the June 8 quake. The National Weather Service-Miami posted on X a tweet about the aftermath felt here.

The Naples Daily News earthquake database contains an earthquake map and graphics, including one that tracks by state how many earthquakes experienced and how many per year. Earthquakes considered “significant events” earn that title due to a combination of magnitude, number of “Did You Feel It?” responses, and a PAGER alert level.

On June 8, 2026, the database showed Florida had one earthquake so far this year, but Alaska and California had more than 19,000 each.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2026, a week after the June 8 quake, the database shows Alaska had almost 20,800 earthquakes (four were significant), and California reported 20,035, with six significant.

Florida, which is well known for its hurricanes and tropical storms over earthquakes and sinkholes, is in the beginning stages of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30 every year.
