Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino has liver disease, the Hall of Famer revealed Monday in an interview with People.
Marino, who turned 64 on Monday, says he was diagnosed with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) back in 2007 and has been managing it for the last 18 years.
“I wasn’t really working out as much as I should — because I used to work out when I played all the time and I kind of got away from that a little bit,” Marino told People. “Those are the things I kind of noticed. Then they told me I had a fatty liver. I had MASH.”
After adjusting his diet and getting back to exercising regularly, Marino is feeling optimistic about his prognosis, which he believes is “gonna get better and better and better.”
Marino spent his entire 17-year NFL career with the Dolphins and currently serves as a special advisor for the franchise. He earned MVP honors in his second season in the league and earned nine Pro Bowls nods. Marino ranks ninth in NFL history in passing yards (61,361) and seventh in passing touchdowns (420).
