While a Daytona Beach woman slept, her small children wandered about a mile away from their home, walking near busy streets before showing up at a business, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
The boys, ages 4 and 5, were unharmed and when asked, did not know their mother’s name, Volusia County sheriff’s deputies said.
Ashley Brianna Donique Boyd, 25, was charged Monday, Sept. 22 with two counts of child neglect. On Tuesday Sept. 23, Volusia County Branch Jail records showed she was released on her own recognizance by a judge.
Deputies: Mom had previously failed to supervise children
Investigating deputies said they have previously received reports that Boyd had failed to properly supervise her small boys on a prior occasion.
“Nap time at the LOI (location of incident) appears to only be applicable to D1 (Boyd), because as (Boyd) slept for almost 3.5 hours, her 4- and 5-year-old boys ended up leaving the home, walking approximately .7 miles to a local business, and finally finding a responsible adult,” deputies wrote in their report.
Deputies said the children did not know how to spell their names and only knew that their house was brown and that it was “far,” deputies noted in their report.
When deputies showed up at the Daytona Beach home and awoke Boyd, they asked her if she knew where her children were. She responded that they should be in the house, a report shows.
Boyd showed no emotion when she was told that the children had been in relative danger while wandering the neighborhood and within close proximity to busy streets, deputies wrote in the report.
The children were released in the custody of another family member. Deputies notitifed the Department of Children and Families of the incident, the report states.
