DAYTONA BEACH — Daytona Beach commissioners supported having the city’s internal auditor dig into utilities after residents reported unusually high water bills.
Commissioner Quanita May said it’s an issue she’s hearing about repeatedly. And residents who contact her can’t explain why the water bills are high.
“For whatever reason, the utility bills in some areas seem exorbitant,” she said.
In one case, a resident bought new appliances because he assumed his old appliances were using too much water. That didn’t fix the issue. Another man had a plumber investigate his home to try and locate a problem.
“There was nothing wrong with the home. It’s just a really high bill,” May said.
May asked commissioners to support having the internal auditor look at the city’s water services to make sure it’s not an issue with the city’s process. Commissioners voiced support for having the auditor look into the issue after he finishes his audit of the city marina.
“It’s more about correcting a process or validating a process, and I’ve heard it too often,” May said.
Two commissioners, Paula Reed and Dannette Henry, were absent from the meeting because of illness and travel.
