Interstate 10 westbound in Madison County is temporarily closed Thursday morning following “a significant” two-vehicle fatal wreck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The closure is near mile marker 264, close to the interstate rest area. FHP said the highway is expected to remain closed for several hours as emergency crews investigate and clear the wreckage.
An FHP spokesperson told the Democrat at 8 a.m. that troopers and emergency personnel are on the scene.
The accident involved a semi-truck and an SUV. According to FHP, the SUV slammed into the back of the semi, which was sitting stationary in an outside westbound emergency lane. A 55-year-old Panama City man was killed in the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene.
Motorists should expect significant delays, avoid the area if possible and seek alternate routes, FHP said. Traffic is being rerouted as of 9 a.m.
