After winning the job as Baker Mayfield’s primary backup, Teddy Bridgewater brings an immediate and substantial boost to the Buccaneers’ quarterback room.
Signed in early August to shore up depth amid injuries to Michael Pratt and a bruised hand for Mayfield, Bridgewater adds over a decade of NFL experience to a group that had leaned heavily on developmental players. Head coach Todd Bowles underscored the move’s intent: “He brings us a wealth of experience at that spot,” filling a glaring need the team lacked.
A former Pro Bowl quarterback with over 15,000 career passing yards and a 66.4% completion percentage, Bridgewater’s journeyman résumé spans over six different franchises and, most recently, a brief playoff stint with the Lions.
In his first preseason appearance for Tampa Bay, after just two weeks in the system, Bridgewater proved why he was worth signing. He completed 6 of 11 passes for 85 yards, including two precise touchdown throws, showcasing pocket poise, smart decisions, and chemistry with receivers he’d barely practiced with. Bridgewater’s recent coaching experience at Miami Northwestern adds to that intangible value.
Having led a team to the state championship, he brings mentorship and calm-under-pressure leadership, which is not a trait easily measured by stats, but invaluable in a heated NFL season.
