Fox Sports’ Greg Auman recently shared comments from Baker Mayfield regarding the departure of longtime Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans and what it means for Tampa Bay’s offense moving forward.
Mayfield acknowledged that losing a player of Evans’ caliber is never easy, but he also believes it creates opportunities for the next generation of receivers to take on larger roles within the offense.
The Buccaneers quarterback spoke highly of Evans and noted that their relationship remains strong despite the veteran receiver’s move to San Francisco. While Tampa Bay will miss Evans’ production and leadership, Mayfield pointed to the talent already on the roster as a reason for optimism.
One player expected to take on a larger role is Chris Godwin Jr.. According to Mayfield, Godwin has embraced a leadership role in the receiver room and remains one of the offense’s most trusted veterans.
Mayfield also expressed confidence in the development of Tampa Bay’s younger receivers, including Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, and Tez Johnson. With several young pass catchers expected to see expanded opportunities, the quarterback believes the group is prepared to continue growing in 2026.
The biggest takeaway from Mayfield’s comments was that replacing Evans will not fall on one player alone. Instead, the Buccaneers expect the responsibility to be shared throughout the receiver room, with multiple players contributing as Tampa Bay looks to move forward without one of the most productive receivers in franchise history.
While Evans leaves behind massive shoes to fill, Mayfield appears confident that the combination of veteran leadership and emerging young talent will help the Buccaneers remain productive offensively in 2026.
