The college football season is nearing, with the first kickoff on Aug. 29; training camp is starting a month before that, so we’re closing in on the start of fall practices.
Before fall camp begins, The Athletic released a new outlook on the quarterback competitions to take a look at where every Power Four program stands at the quarterback position, with returners looking to leap in that role, or new transfers trying to find their footing within the roster.
The Florida Gators have both Tramell Jones Jr. and Aaron Philo; let’s see how they stack up against each other heading into camp.
Aaron Philo is perceived to have the advantage within the quarterback competition due to his following his offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech to Florida, but Philo has yet to start a full season or put enough film on tape to be anointed the favorite outside of that.
In his career so far, Philo has 938 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and three interceptions. He did show flashes last season when he started for Haynes King against Gardner Webb, throwing for 373 yards and completing 75% of his passes.
Jones, a true freshman last season, played in a garbage-time blowout against LIU in which he threw for 131 yards on a 66% completion percentage and two passing touchdowns. Coming out of spring ball, Jones did have an impressive game, but with a couple of weeks left, the Gators staff has a pivotal decision to make.
