Residents across Florida, including Gainesville, reported feeling light shaking and tremors the afternoon of June 8 after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake off Cuba’s west coast.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 2 p.m. about 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Pinar del Río, Cuba.
The National Weather Service in Jacksonville said it received reports of tremors as far north as the Jacksonville area
“There is NO tsunami threat at area beaches from this earthquake,” a NWS Facebook post said.
Residents in North Central Florida also took to social media to share their experiences.
“We’re in the hospital in lake City Fixing to get surgery done on Sadie for her gallbladder and we felt it here,” one Facebook user wrote.
“I felt something here near High Springs. Bookshelf next to me was shaking slightly,” another use wrote.
Others reported feeling shaking in St. Augustine, Green Cove Springs, Palatka, Fort White, Live Oak and Ocala.
