3 To Know: Resilient coral reefs; one dead in crash; other headlines

1. STUDY: Scientists identify resilient coral reefs

Scientists have identified nearly 64,000 square miles of coral reefs that are capable of surviving and recovering from climate change, three times more than previously estimated, research showed on June 16.

The world’s coral reefs, which sustain a quarter of all marine life, have come under severe stress as a result of violent tropical storms, pollution and mass “bleaching” events caused by soaring ocean temperatures, with some scientists warning that they are facing irreversible decline.

But an analysis of 45,000 coral surveys together with decades of climate and ocean data has identified climate-resilient reefs across 71 countries and 100 territories, including in parts of the Caribbean and the Pacific and Atlantic oceans that have not previously been recognized.

“Coral reefs are often framed as ecosystems beyond saving,” said Emily Darling, director of coral conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society and one of the report’s authors. “This research shows otherwise. We know where the hope is and what we need now is political will.” – Reuters

2. NEWS BRIEFS: Plane goes down in East Naples; one dead in Collier traffic crash

Aviation authorities are investigating a small airplane that went down June 20, in East Naples. No injuries were reported, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded at 10:35 a.m. to a report of plane crash at Wing South Airpark off Rattlesnake Hammock Road, said Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Michelle Batten. The plane had struck a wall. “There were four people on board,” Batten said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are both investigating the incident, she said.

And an 85-year-old Miramar woman died in a Collier County crash June 19, state police say.

The crash happened at 6:49 p.m. on State Road 29, about 11/2 miles north of Interstate 75 (Alligator Alley) in Collier, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
