1. FUNNY MONEY: Made for movies, circulating in Florida
Funny money from Hollywood has made landfall in the Florida Keys. According to the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office, a slew of fake bills used in blockbuster films were recently spotted circulating in the area, most notably in the Lower Keys and Key West.
“The $100 bills are marked as fake, stating they are to be used only in making motion pictures, but they may look accurate at a casual glance,” officials said in a social media post.
Due to the phony money currently in circulation, the sheriff ’s office is encouraging everyone in the area to “double- check any bills you use/receive.”
Months before the sheriff’s office issued a warning about the fake $100 bills, the Key West Police Department issued a similar public service announcement about $20 bills. “Check your twenties! Some movie prop bills have made it into circulation!” the department said. “Though they’re marked ‘for motion picture purposes,’ They can fool you. Oh, and if Andrew Jackson has a smirk, that’s another clear giveaway!”
According to the department, a local businessman alerted the agency of a fake bill “in his till” and asked if they could issue a warning. – Amaris Encinas/USA TODAY
2. ALMOND BUTTER: Offers a healthful swap for PB
Whether it’s cream cheese on a bagel, jelly on toast or mayo in a sandwich, most of us enjoy a good spread. But more people today are looking for healthier swaps including low-fat mayo, organic jellies or Greek yogurt, especially when trying to cut down on calories, added sugars or saturated fats.
Enter almond butter, “a creamy alternative to classic peanut butter that provides more versatility with a similar nutrition profile,” says Kristina Cooke, a licensed nutritionist and registered dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The smooth spread has become so popular that it’s expected to reach a worldwide valuation of nearly $1.3 billion by 2035, according to Future Market Insights Inc. – Amaris Encinas/USA TODAY
3. DAR TRIBUTE: On display at the Marco library
As you go around town this month, be sure to drop by the Marco Island Library to see the new historical display reflecting the upcoming 250th birthday of the United States of America.
The timeline presentation is a joint project of the Marco Island Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and its sister chapter in Naples. The members collaborated on the project which will be front and center at the library through November.
And, of course, while you are at the Marco Library, you can check out (literally!) any of the myriads of historical books that tell the remarkable story of the people and circumstances that coalesced in 1776 into the most exceptional country in history – The United States of America.
The Marco Library is at 210 Heathwood Drive. Call 239.252.7064 or visit collierlibrary.org.
