After the San Francisco 49ers lost Nick Bosa to a torn ACL early in the 2025 season, it became evident just how much help the team needed on the edge for the remainder of the year.
With that, the 49ers attempted to acquire Jermaine Johnson II from the New York Jets in a trade at the deadline, but their offer came up short, but it wasn’t reported what San Francisco offered.
However, on Thursday, SNY’s Connor Hughes reported that the 49ers offered the Jets a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft while New York was looking for a second-round pick.
Instead of landing Johnson, San Francisco’s only trade addition midseason to the defensive line was the acquisition of Keion White from the New England Patriots.
White recorded 12 tackles, six quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, one pass defensed and one fumble recovery in nine games with the 49ers. Meanwhile Johnson recorded 24 tackles, four quarterback hits and two sacks during the same stretch with the Jets.
Former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh clearly had an affinity for Johnson, as Saleh drafted Johnson when he was in New York. Now that he’s running the Tennessee Titans, Saleh has acquired Johnson in a trade.
