Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol on Highway 101 in Ventura County on March 4, authorities said.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol arrested Spears, 44, of Westlake Village around 8:48 p.m. on Westlake Boulevard, according to a news release from the CHP’s Moorpark-area office.
CHP officers pulled over Spears alone in her BMW 430i after she was seen allegedly driving erratically at a high rate of speed on southbound Highway 101 near Borchard Road exit in Thousand Oaks, CHP officials said.
Officers pulled Spears over and had her perform a series of field sobriety tests after she had allegedly showed signs of impairment, officials said.
The CHP’s Moorpark-area office is investigating the incident and chemical test results are pending.
She was arrested and booked into Ventura County jail and released around 3 a.m. on March 5, jail records show. She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4, records show.
Spears’ arrest comes five years after her conservatorship, overseen by father Jamie Spears, was terminated by a California judge in November 2021. The singer, who was 39 at the time of the ruling, was placed under the legal arrangement at age 26 in 2008 after suffering a public breakdown the year prior that played out before the paparazzi, who captured her seemingly erratic behavior.
Spears, whose hit songs and showstopping live performances helped define pop music at the turn of the millennium, has largely retreated from the musical spotlight following the termination of her conservatorship. Her most recent album, “Glory,” was released in 2016.
The “Baby One More Time” singer released collaborative singles with Elton John (“Hold Me Closer”) and Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.i.am (“Mind Your Business”) in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
