The Bob Chesney era of UCLA Bruins is leaning into their roots. UCLA is back to recruiting hard in Southern California and taking pride in the Los Angeles area. In doing that, the Bruins have earned back some cool factor.
It’s something that Chesney and the Bruins should embrace with open arms, taking full advantage of their aesthetically-pleasing uniforms. UCLA has brought out the old-school Chevrolet Bel Air convertible for recruits, which makes for some epic photoshoots for on-campus visits.
UCLA’s latest nod to Los Angeles occurred on Twitter, where Bruins wide receivers coach Colin Lockett paid homage to L.A. rapper and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle. Lockett’s post depicts a UCLA football player in a full uniform in another old-school rig with a bag from Marathon Burger, a burger chain that was founded from Hussle’s estate.
Hussle was a cultural staple in Los Angeles even before his untimely death in 2019. In addition to his successes as an artist and in business, Hussle was charitable with his time and money in his neighborhood of Crenshaw.
Lockett is an L.A. native himself, growing up in Diamond Bar before playing college football at San Diego State. After playing for the Aztecs, Lockett played in the NFL, mostly on the practice squad, with Cincinnati and Washington and then jumping to the BC Lions in the CFL.
Lockett began coaching in 2017 at the high school level. Since then, he’s coached at San Diego State, Washington, Oregon, UC Davis, New Mexico and now the Bruins. Lockett’s back in Los Angeles, this time with the Bruins, and he’s ready and willing to show some love back to the city.
