UCLA basketball adds two more players, including three-star freshman guard Markell Alston

UCLA’s men’s basketball head coach Mick Cronin is continuing to add to the Bruins’ roster through the end of the spring. Guard Markell Alston signed on to join a compelling UCLA team this fall.

Alston is a 6’2” guard who will come to Westwood from Middle Village, New York. Alston also received offers from Creighton, Seton Hall and Big Ten rival Illinois. Alston was not ranked by 247 Sports but Rivals had Alston as a three star recruit.

Alston was announced by the team on Monday, alongside graduate student Anthony Peoples Jr., with Peoples coming to the Bruins from North Carolina Central after averaging 5.0 points per game last season.

“We are excited to add both Anthony and Markell to the program this summer,” Cronin said in the university’s release on Monday. “Both of these players are going to help our depth and provide an immediate impact in practice. Anthony has played in college for the past three seasons, and he can definitely help us in our frontcourt. He’s from the Inland Empire and he was teammates several years ago at Corona Centennial with both Donovan Dent and Eric Freeny. I know that Anthony is excited to be back here in Southern California. Markell comes to us from New York, having played for Coach Joe Arbitello at Christ the King. He’s shown versatility at the guard position and we look forward to having him with us in Westwood.”

Just like UCLA’s Brandon Williams, Alston attended Christ the King High School in Queens, New York, where he averaged 13.1 points per game as a senior. Alston was named to the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association’s All-Second Team.
