Two men were found dead after they exchanged gunfire at their home in Yucaipa on Wednesday, law enforcement officials said.
The gunfire was first reported about 12:15 p.m. April 8 at a home in the 12000 block of Bryant Street, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Responding deputies encountered Stephan James Slivka Jr., 66, and Rodney Lee Chanadet, 68, both of Yucaipa, suffering from gunshot wounds, the agency said in a written statement. They both died at the scene.
Homicide detectives determined the deaths stemmed from a gunfight between the two men.
“Through investigation, detectives believe Slivka and Chanadet struck each other with gunfire,” according to the statement. “Slivka succumbed to his injuries and Chanadet shot himself after sustaining a gunshot wound.”
Slivka and Chanadet both lived at the home and were described by sheriff’s officials as friends.
No further details, including a possible motive, were released Thursday as the investigation continued.
