Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby draws comparison to Matthew Stafford

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was set to feature for the Red Raiders this upcoming collegiate season. However, Sorsby has been ruled ineligible to play this season after he was alleged to have placed bets during his collegiate career.

Due to the NCAA ruling that Sorsby bet on his own team, his ineligibility has made him a candidate for the NFL supplemental draft, which will take place in late July if any eligible prospects enter. With Sorsby potentially coming to the NFL, he’s recently drawn comparisons to Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Ty Simpson.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote about the situation and gathered opinions on Sorsby’s play from the NFL. One executive believes Sorsby’s film eclipsed Simpson’s, based on limited viewing.

“Just the limited tape I saw,” said one AFC assistant GM, “he looked better than Ty [Simpson]. The accuracy was better, and he’s an athlete who can run and extend plays. That combination of athleticism, accuracy and arm, he looked like a guy who could be a threat with his feet, extend plays and throw off-platform—plus he’s accurate from the pocket.”

An NFC assistant enjoyed Sorsby’s throwing ability, comparing it to some of the best playmakers in the league. He even stated that an element of Sorsby’s game emulates Stafford’s.

“I hate to say it, you hate to make this comparison to [Patrick] Mahomes and Caleb [Williams], but he has that twitch, the arm angles of [Matthew] Stafford,” said one NFC offensive coordinator. “His arm is electric. It would’ve been by far the best in this [2026] class. Zach Wilson’s arm was that way, extremely talented, too. As a thrower, his arm would be top eight or so in the league.”

While the Rams are not in need of Sorsby’s services immediately, they could use a QB3 next season, unless they decide to extend Stetson Bennett.

During his stops with Indiana, Cincinnati, and now Texas Tech (for whom he never took a snap), Sorsby placed thousands of sports wagers, as alleged by the NCAA, and that his betting went beyond collegiate sports. Sorsby has announced via social media that he is a gambling addict, has completed rehab for his addiction, and hopes to move forward with his career.

While Sorsby continues to fight the NCAA in court, hoping to reverse the decision and make him eligible for this season, an answer has not been given. After a court date on Monday, a ruling is expected this week. If Sorsby does declare for the supplemental draft, he’s subject to potential punishment by the NFL. That would be a conversation and another potential legal battle for another time.
