Stafford, Garrett named top contenders to break NFL records

The Los Angeles Rams could have two players chasing NFL records this season.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford and edge rusher Myles Garrett are legitimate candidates to make history, says Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim. Stafford’s target is Tom Brady’s record for fourth-quarter comebacks, while Garrett’s is his own single-season sack record.

Stafford is currently seven fourth-quarter comebacks away from tying Brady’s record of 46. Geitheim notes that if Stafford plays at least two more seasons, breaking the record is more than feasible. The caveat, of course, is that the Rams likely won’t be playing from behind as much as the Detroit Lions were during Stafford’s early years.

Much of Stafford’s career comeback total was built during his Detroit years, where he accrued 31 in 12 years. The Rams are a legitimate contender, which is a big reason why Stafford has just eight in five seasons.

Then there’s Garrett, who arrives in Los Angeles having just set the single-season sack record. Garrett broke Michael Strahan’s record this past season, finishing with 23 sacks after Strahan’s mark had stood for 25 years. Now in L.A., Garrett could legitimately break that record again.

Either way, this is shaping up as a storyline worth tracking all season long in Los Angeles.
