Shasta County sets timeline for next vote update

The Shasta County Elections Office expects to post its next batch of votes in the Tuesday primary election around 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4.

Anna Rodriguez, the supervising staff service analyst at the elections office, said in an interview with the Record Searchlight that Shasta County Clerk/Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis made a rule that every day ballots are tabulated, the elections office will release more votes online.

The county posted its unofficial vote results from partial reporting from all precincts at 3:36 a.m. on June 3. The elections office has not made any other updates since then.

Shasta County voters went to the polls on June 2 to decide several local races and two measures. Among those were:

Curtis, when asked if there is anything that has made the process more cumbersome this election, said the following:

“We are trying to hurry the process because the California 1st Congressional District race has a shorter certification date as well as a cure period that is one-third the normal 28-day cure time. We are trying to have everything counted by Monday in order to give our voters as much time as possible to cure any deficiencies.”

North State counties that had on their ballot the District 1 special election to fill the unexpired term for Doug LaMalfa, who died unexpectedly in January, are on a tight deadline to turn around their vote results.

The California Secretary of State’s unofficial election results website states that those counties, Shasta included, must report the final results by June 11.

But unlike the special election, the rest of the races from the June 2 ballot cannot be certified until their “prescribed certification date,” Curtis said.

He confirmed he also plans to count all votes in the special and primary elections by Monday, June 8.

Counties must report final primary election results to the Secretary of State’s office by July 3.

Rodriguez said there are some elements she’s noticed that may have slowed Shasta’s election down, but said she would leave it to Curtis to give his thoughts.

Curtis did not specifically address this topic in his response to the Record Searchlight.

Butte County, which has a similar population to Shasta, released fresh vote results at 4:46 p.m. on June 3.

Yolo County, another county with a population similar to Shasta, last reported results at 1:15 a.m. on June 3.
