In the last two preseasons, Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t take a single snap for the Los Angeles Rams. Stetson Bennett could receive similar treatment this year, which would be a major endorsement from Sean McVay and the coaching staff.
McVay told reporters on Saturday that Ty Simpson will definitely play in the preseason but he’s unsure if Bennett will play at all. Bennett has been the Rams’ primary quarterback in the preseason for the last three years, but he could get the veteran treatment this summer.
Considering Garoppolo was the backup quarterback for the last two years, this can be taken as a good sign for Bennett in the competition to back up Stafford.
It’s been trending that way anyway, with Bennett leading the starting offense when Matthew Stafford has gotten the day off. He’s also gotten second-team reps over Simpson when Stafford has practiced, clearly sitting ahead of the rookie on the depth chart.
Simpson is the long-term option for the Rams behind Stafford, but in the immediate future, it seems Bennett is their QB2. Considering the way his career started, stepping away from the team for his entire rookie year, Bennett has made great strides to stick around in Los Angeles.
