Report: Rams want to retain Quentin Lake 'if a deal makes sense'

It’s rare for the Los Angeles Rams to re-sign their own defensive backs, particularly safeties. Could Quentin Lake buck that trend before he leaves in free agency next offseason?

There’s no denying Lake’s value on defense, being a former signal caller wearing the green dot and a current captain of the team. He’s a leader and versatile chess piece who can line up at safety, dime backer or in the slot as a corner.

Lake’s contract will expire after the 2025 season but the Rams can prevent him from departing by signing him to an extension before that happens. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Rams are “interested in retaining him if a deal makes sense.”

Also, Quentin Lake is a do-it-all chess piece for Sean McVay’s defense, and the Rams are interested in retaining him if a deal makes sense.

That’s pretty vague and fairly obvious but it does suggest they’re at least open to the idea of re-signing Lake to an extension if the price is right. They’d be wise to keep him in the mix, given all that he does for the defense.

He’s been one of their best players this season and isn’t someone they can easily replace. Given the lack of depth and overall talent at cornerback, Lake helps aid in that department thanks to his position flexibility. He’s essentially a corner with how often he lines up in the slot, covering wideouts and tight ends man-to-man each week.

Lake, 26, was a sixth-round pick out of UCLA in 2022 and has become a draft steal for the Rams over the last three-plus seasons.
