The San Francisco 49ers have been looking for a trade partner for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the last two months, but it doesn’t appear that they’ve had much luck in their search.
Now, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, San Francisco could release Aiyuk as early as Wednesday.
Aiyuk, 27, had a strong start with the 49ers, catching 269 passes for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns through his first four seasons. After signing a massive extension in 2024, he recorded just 25 receptions for 374 yards before tearing his ACL in Week 7.
The wide receiver apparently cut off communication with the team in the offseason and has his guarantees voided. While he was still seen around the building from time to time, he was just rehabbing, and even that eventually stopped.
Many believe that Aiyuk will reunite with his college quarterback, Jayden Daniels, with the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal when the release is made official.
