Rams want to get Blake Corum ‘some more work’ behind Kyren Williams

Kyren Williams has been the Los Angeles Rams’ workhorse back since taking over as the starter in 2023 but Sean McVay always talks about wanting to get other players involved to lighten Williams’ load. One week into the 2025 season, he wants to do that again.

McVay told reporters on Monday that he wants to get Blake Corum more touches behind Williams after only giving him one carry in the Rams’ 14-9 win over the Houston Texans. Corum played a total of 10 snaps but only touched it twice in the game, one of which was a 14-yard reception.

Williams, meanwhile, played 82% of the offensive snaps, carried the ball 18 times and caught one pass for 3 yards.

“Yeah, we’d like Blake to get more,” McVay said. “I’d like us to be able to run the ball more efficiently. I’d like to do a better job for our group. I’d like us to be more efficient on early downs, be able to sustain some more drives. It was a unique game. Sometimes those things can unfold, but that is not ideal.”

Corum had a quiet rookie year in 2024, carrying it 58 times for 207 yards in the 17 games he was active for. He never had more than eight rushes in a single game, rarely taking much of the workload off of Williams’ plate.

McVay wants to change that this season, aiming to keep Williams fresh for the long haul.

“I want to get Blake some more work,” he continued. “I thought it ended up that way. Kyren did an excellent job in some stuff. Some things we can improve upon, but we do want to get Blake more involved. We need to be able to have better continuity. That’s a collective thing, starting with me and to our whole group to be able to get more plays off and have more sustained drives that I think can be reflected in some of the balance and some of the distribution of snap counts, especially as it relates to what you’re asking with the running backs.”

Rookie Jarquez Hunter was inactive so he wasn’t a factor at all in the Rams’ first game of the season, leaving Williams, Corum and Cody Schrader as the only three active backs. Schrader is merely there for special teams, so it’ll likely be Williams and Corum in the backfield moving forward.

It’s just unclear how often we’ll actually see Corum on the field because at this point, McVay is starting to sound like a broken record with how often he says he wants to get backup running backs involved.
