When the Los Angeles Rams opened camp on Sunday, it was Stetson Bennett running the first-team offense with Matthew Stafford getting the day off. Ty Simpson worked with the backups, but that won’t always be the case when Stafford sits out the first and third days of each four-day block.
Sean McVay is keeping the plan at backup quarterback fluid as the Rams try to sort out which player will be the QB2 this season. After Bennett got most of the second-team reps ahead of Simpson on Monday when Stafford returned, McVay said he doesn’t want to “pigeonhole” himself with a pre-determined plan each day.
“Yeah, I would say this. I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into one-size approach,” he said. “Stetson got the majority of those reps with the second group today, but Ty came in and did a nice job with the one set that he did have. And we’ll just continue to evaluate, but being able to figure out what that looks like is important. I think both those guys have done a nice job and obviously having No. 9 out there, he looked pretty damn sharp so it was good to have him out there.”
McVay knows how crucial it is for the Rams to sort out the backup quarterback situation with Bennett and Simpson. They could choose to carry only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, which would ultimately mean Bennett gets cut.
But if they want to carry three, it’ll be a sign that Bennett will be the No. 2 quarterback and Simpson will be the third-stringer. Training camp will help decide that battle, as will the preseason, and it’s one that could have a ripple effect on the rest of the roster.
For now, it seems as if Bennett is the frontrunner to back up Stafford, but as McVay said, the team will constantly evaluate that situation.
