On June 11, Los Angeles Rams team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache was linked to a report by the New York Times that he supported the use of performance-enhancing drugs by combat superstar and former UFC champion Conor McGregor.
ElAttrache, who holds top medical positions in the NFL and MLB and is one of the top sports surgeons in the world, was investigated by Major League Baseball after the report was published. On Friday, MLB cleared ElAttrache of any wrongdoing.
“MLB took our responsibility to conduct due diligence in this matter seriously,” the league said in a statement Tuesday. “We interviewed Dr. Neal ElAttrache last week, covering multiple topics, and he answered our questions thoroughly.
“Based on our interview, the review of relevant records, Dr. ElAttrache’s long history of support for and cooperation with the Joint Drug Program and the fact that no Therapeutic Use Exemption requests of this nature have been submitted by Dr. ElAttrache or anyone else, we do not have any concerns regarding Dr. ElAttrache’s treatment of MLB players, or his adherence to the Joint Drug Programs and related rules.”
The league considers the matter closed.
In July 2021, ElAttrache performed surgery on McGregor following his defeat to Dustin Poirier in a UFC contest. The extensive surgery required ElAttrache to insert a rod, plates, and screws into McGregor’s left leg. Due to the extent of the injury, treatment, and recovery, ElAttrache referred McGregor to a bone specialist. That specialist prescribed steroids for McGregor.
ElAttrache wrote in support of McGregor’s request for a therapeutic use exemption under UFC drug policies. ElAttrache also told McGregor to check with UFC drug testers about the medications given by the specialist.
ElAttrache has stated he had no involvement in McGregor’s treatment with steroids and was not part of McGregor’s evaluation with the consultant. ElAttrache stated he’s comfortable with the process undertaken by Major League Baseball and has assured the public that his practices have, and will continue to be, within the rules and regulations of medical guidelines.
ElAttrache has operated on Cooper Kupp and Cam Akers in the past and remains a critical member of the Rams’ medical team.
