Peter Schrager details Aaron Donald's preferred role if he returns

The NFL world is buzzing with the possibility of legendary defensive tackle Aaron Donald making a spectacular return to the Los Angeles Rams. On a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, NFL insider Peter Schrager shared crucial insights into Donald’s mindset, emphasizing that if the future Hall of Famer does return, it will not be in a limited or compromised capacity.

According to Schrager, Donald is focused on maintaining his elite standard of play rather than returning as a shell of his former self. His recent workout sessions are not just about staying active—they are a deliberate assessment of whether his body can still perform at a championship level.

“Aaron Donald is not going to come back as some 30-cents-on-the-dollar version of Aaron Donald,” Schrager explained. “He wants to be ready—that’s why that workout was going on. He wants to be fully where he was when he retired two years ago. He wants to be the best version of himself.”

A major takeaway from Schrager’s update is Donald’s rejection of a late-season “rent-a-player” role. While some analysts have speculated that Donald might return for a playoff push and play minimal snaps to preserve his healt, Schrager firmly dismissed that idea. Donald’s vision for a comeback is an all-or-nothing proposition: a full-season commitment where he can dominate from Week 1 through the postseason.

“This is not going to be one of those deals where it’s like, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4,” Schrager added. “No, no, no. He wants to go the full season if he comes back.”

Interestingly, the financial side of a potential deal remains completely untouched. Schrager revealed that the Rams and Donald have not yet initiated contract negotiations, prioritizing his physical readiness and personal desire to play above all else.

“When I tell you, they haven’t even discussed money yet. So, that’s the secondary part of this,” Schrager said. “The first part is, does Aaron Donald want to come back? Is he prepared to come back? Is he ready to come back? The Rams would welcome him with open arms, obviously, if the numbers worked out.”

With Rams training camp scheduled to kick off in just a week, the clock is ticking on a final decision. A lot of the recent reports lean “yes” to a return for Donald, but nothing appears to be imminent with the 2026 season a few months away.
