Paityn Zimmerman's home runs in the same inning lead University Prep

Paityn Zimmerman hit a pair of home runs in a nine-run third inning to lead the University Prep softball team to a 13-5 victory over Victor Valley on Tuesday in a tuneup as the CIF-Southern Section playoffs approach.

The Jaguars struck for three runs in the first inning and broke the game open with nine runs in the third, capped by a grand slam from Zimmerman.

The senior ended going 3 for 4 with five RBIs and three runs. 

Briseis Vargas earned the win in the circle, pitching six innings with six strikeouts while allowing one earned run. At the dish, she went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and one run.

Jocelyn Lopez went 2 for 2 with four RBIs, two runs and one stolen base, and Daisy Manriquez went 2 for 4 with one RBI and one run. 

For Victor Valley, Susanna Ramirez went 2 for 4 with one RBI and two runs, and Alyssa Vega went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. 

Both Victor Valley and University Prep have qualified for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, with brackets scheduled to be released May 11.

Victor Valley ends its season 7-16 overall and a third-place finish in the Desert Sky League standings. University Prep (15-9) will end the regular season Wednesday against Apple Valley.

Other Softball Scores

Silverado 11, Granite Hills 4

At Victorville, the Hawks won their seventh game in a row on May 4. 

Alexis Rodriguez struck out four batters over seven innings to collect the win, and at the plate went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Victoria Patino led the offense by going 4 for 4 with three runs, and Valerie Beltran went 3 for 4 with a home run, five RBIs and two runs. 

For Granite Hills, Isabel Brandon hit a two-run home run, and Alina Salgado hit a two-run single. 

Aquinas 5, Riverside Prep 4

At San Bernardino, Lila Morris struck out 19 batters over 10 ⅔ innings as the Silver Knights lost in extra innings on May 4. 

The freshman pitcher threw 178 pitches, with 111 for a strike. 

Sadie Martinez went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Meeka Martinez went 3 for 5 with two runs. 

Baseball Scores

Academy for Academic Excellence 4, University Prep 3

At Victorville, the Knights wrapped up the season with a victory in extra innings over the Jaguars on May 5. 

Caleb Walker singled to drive in Aiden Carmona, who hit a leadoff single in the top of the eighth inning. Gavin Ripley stranded the tying-run at first base to record the win. He ended with five strikeouts over 2 ⅔ scoreless innings. 

For University Prep, Angel Herrera went 3 for 4, and Conor Byrom struck out eight batters over five scoreless innings. 

Silver Valley 3, Lucerne Valley 2

At Yermo, Mason Melcher struck out 11 batters over 5 ⅔ innings to lead the Trojans on May 5. 

Justis Castro went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run and a stolen base. 

For Lucerne Valley, Jonathan Gonzalez went 2 for 3. 

Barstow 7, Adelanto 3

At Barstow, the Aztecs celebrated Senior Night on May 4 with a victory. 

Senior Robert Shipley struck out seven batters and allowed one earned run over six innings for the win, and at the plate went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. 

Kahlil Pope went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Trevor Shenk went 2 for 2 with a home run, three RBIs. 

For Adelanto, Aksel Inzunza went 2 for 3 with a home run and two runs; Jaeden Stewart and Jeremy Madrigal both recorded two hits.

Silverado 8, Granite Hills 4

At Apple Valley, Fabian Garcia struck out four batters and allowed two earned runs over seven innings to lead the Hawks on May 4. 

Garcia also recorded a hit and scored a pair of runs, and Colin Murphy went 3 for 4 with three runs.

Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy 10, Hesperia Christian 9

At Victorville, the Cougars rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off victory over the Patriots on May 4. 

Brody Irvin scored the game-winning run on an error after a grounder was hit to shortstop. Irvin ended 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. 

For Hesperia Christian, Luke Coogan went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs.

Austin Koester went 3 for 5 with a RBI and three runs.
