There were 972 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Oak Hills softball player Amaya Sigala ended with 42.49% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The junior received 972 votes, beating out 11 other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Sigala went 2 for 2 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs in a 19-9 victory over Sultana on April 1. She followed that by going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, three runs, and a walk in a 30-4 victory over Burroughs on April 3.
In the voting, Sigala beat Riverside Prep’s Daisy Hernandez, who received 23.97% of the total votes (233).
The nominees were selected based on performances between March 30 and April 4.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
