The hot streak continues into the playoffs.
The Newbury Park High boys lacrosse team extended its winning streak to nine games by earning its first playoff win since 2017 on Wednesday, April 29.
Senior Ryan Bartlett had five goals and two assists, senior George Hees finished with four goals, and junior Tylar Jimenez had two goals and two assists as the Panthers routed visiting Royal, 19-2, in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
“We’re definitely playing the best lacrosse of the year right now, which is obviously good,” said Newbury Park coach Dan Podesta. “We’re firing on all cylinders and ready to make a playoff run.”
Jake Sabatini had a goal and two assists, Daniel Hernandez had a goal and an assist, Nicolas De Wit had a goal, an assist and three ground balls, and Colt Ward made five saves in goal as Newbury Park (13-7) earned its first postseason win in the CIF-SS era.
The Panthers, which will host Irvine-Beckman in Friday’s second round, had lost four straight first-round matches since a 10-5 win over Westlake in the 2017 U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.
“It was a good all-around effort,” Podesta said. “Our starters did really well. We were able to get everyone in.”
Kai Taylor and Cameron Mesa scored the goals for Royal (7-8).
Division 2
Westlake 10, Anaheim-Canyon 5: Sophomore Preston Rivera had four goals and three assists, sophomore Vic Taisey had three goals and one assist, and senior captain Cole Bakos added a goal and three assists as the Warriors won a postseason game for the fourth straight season.
“We went down 3-0 in the first few minutes and figured it out,” said Westlake coach Peter Swander. “We played a zone the whole game.”
Westlake (11-10), the Marmonte League champion, will visit Saugus in Friday’s second round.
Division 3
Oak Park 13, Riverside-Poly 6: Senior Jayden Mehta scored six goals and senior Ian Morrison had four goals as the Eagles advanced with a home win.
“I’m very proud of the boys,” said first-year coach Kevin Doohan. “They played great. I hope that we’re peaking at the right time. You work all season for these opportunities.”
Goaltender Timmy Jasso had seven saves for Oak Park (11-8), which will host Riverside-King in Friday’s second round.
“He’s a dominating goalie,” Doohan said of Jasso.
Agoura 12, Crescenta Valley 5: Jack McGovern scored four goals and Mikey Zeman had three goals as the Chargers won a playoff game for the eighth time in their last nine seasons.
“We graduated a lot of key players last year, so we have a lot of young kids filling big positions this year,” said Agoura coach Matt Horowitz. “It was great to see them maintain their composure and grind out a tough win against a great opponent, whose goalie was fantastic.”
Dom Khatchatourian won 15 of 17 faceoffs for Agoura, which will visit Cate in Friday’s second round.
Cate 5, Simi Valley 4: Quan Tran had a goal and two assists, Ryan Lumpkin had a goal and an assist and Blake Freeman and Richard Peters also found the net in the first-round loss for the Pioneers (9-5).

Culver City 15, Grace 11: Jaadin Weyandt and Jake Williams had four goals apiece in the Lancers’ first-round loss.
Landon Cooper had a goal and three assists, Riley Williams had a goal and two assists, and Tristan Minsky added a goal.
