For the last two seasons, Byron Young and Jared Verse led the defensive attack for the Los Angeles Rams. The team’s top two edge rushers applied continuous pressure on quarterbacks, using their ability to rush off one another, along with sharing their perspective of the game to deliver results.
Both were named to the Pro Bowl last season and developed a close relationship off the field. Verse was moved in the trade to acquire Myles Garrett, and while Garrett is tasked with taking down the quarterback, he’s more interested in building a relationship with Young and being that piece that Verse used to be, in order to help each other amplify their effectiveness.
“I’ve really taken a notice into his game last year when he started off so hot and him and Jared Verse were working so well and really complemented each other,” Garrett said of Young. “That’s when I really started to watch his tape and since then I just continue to watch. Getting the chance to play with him, it’s like, how can I help elevate and play off him and take his game to another level?”
Those words echo many of the same sentiments Verse said during his time in Los Angeles. For anyone worrying about chemistry issues between the two, it appears the Rams have once again found a defensive line partnership that is spearheaded by selfless pursuits of team greatness.
Garrett led the NFL in sacks last season, setting a league record with 23. Young led the Rams in sacks during that time with a career-high of 12. Young also approached the NFL record for the most consecutive games recording at least half a sack with nine last year.
