Authorities named the homicide victim in the Jan. 31 shooting in Camarillo and the suspect who later died by suicide, saying they continue to investigate the circumstances around the deaths.
Stephen Worthington, 48, of Camarillo, died from multiple gunshots in the 400 block of Walker Avenue around shortly before noon, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. His death was the first in Camarillo in 2026.
Worthington was unarmed at the time of his death, according to an email from sheriff’s Capt. Robert Yoos.
The suspect was identified as Steven Green, 42, also of Camarillo, sheriff’s officials said. He fled the scene and was later stopped by Los Angeles Police officers on Interstate 405 near Imperial Highway. He refused to get out of his vehicle and later apparently shot himself, authorities said.
Los Angeles police spotted the vehicle because of an alert sent out by the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff’s investigators have spoken to witnesses of the shooting and are still trying to determine what, if any, relationship the victim and the shooter had with one another, according to Yoos’ email.
Sheriff’s officials would not say what type of gun the suspect used or whether it was the same weapon he used on himself.
